Environmental Policy

As well as being beautiful, Haddon House's cane and rattan furniture is ecologically friendly. The majority of the rattan we use in our conservatory furniture comes from South East Asia where rattan grows at a rate of up to 6 metres a year and thus quickly renews itself following harvesting. Compare this to wood, which can take a generation or more to renew itself.

Rattan can grow in areas which otherwise deliver little or no benefit to the local community, such as land which remains under flood water for long periods of time and which would otherwise be a drain, rather than an asset, on deprived areas. Rattan also thrives in degraded forests and poor soil and can be introduced into existing forests without damaging the ecosphere. Growing and harvesting rattan can provide a living for families who would otherwise be living on the poverty line - especially as it is easy to work with, requiring only simple tools and machinery.

The presence of rattan within forests also helps protect the existing trees and forests by clinging tightly to the trees, like bubble-wrap, to make sure that during felling, neighbouring trees are not unnecessarily damaged.

By investing in cane or rattan furniture, you can be confident that you are utilising a renewable material and that your purchase will help communities within South East Asia to sustain themselves through the cultivation, harvesting and processing of rattan, rather than relying on external aid.

Because Haddon House buys directly from the manufacturers, we can be sure of the ethical origins of our products.
